Rosacea:Causes, Types and Treatment - Explained by Dr. Yeung Ho Hong(楊浩康)

Dr. Yeung Ho Hong(楊浩康) explains Rosacea

Rosacea is a common chronic skin disease that causes facial redness and is characterized by facial redness and pimples. Patients often have facial flushing, and it lasts longer than normal temporary flushing. There are many factors associated with rosacea, including genetics, environment, sun exposure and vascular sensitivity.

Clinically, rosacea can be divided into four types based on symptoms:

  1. Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea: There will be obvious blood streaks in the center of the face, and redness and hot flashes are common. The skin is dry and rough, becomes very sensitive, and often has a burning tingling sensation.
  2. Papulopustular Rosacea: In addition to redness and burning, there will be similar acne or pus, and the skin is relatively oily.
  3. Phymatous Rosacea: It is common in the nose, and the chin, forehead, cheeks and other cortical tissues proliferate and thicken, which can make the nose continue to be red and swollen, and the pores will also become enlarged.
  4. Ocular Rosacea: The patient's eyes are red, burning and stinging. In severe cases, the eyes will be sensitive to light and affect vision.

The doctor will use the appropriate treatment according to the different types and severity of rosacea. General treatment methods include topical ointments (e.g. metronidazole, azelaic acid, brimonidine) and oral antibiotics (e.g. doxycycline, minocycline, metronidazole). Sometimes the doctor may use laser treatment to improve the redness and remove the proliferating microfilament blood vessels.

Patients suffering from rosacea can better control their condition by taking appropriate care in their daily lives. In terms of diet, try to reduce the consumption of irritating beverages such as alcohol and caffeinated beverages, and eating spicy foods.

Avoid exposure to strong sunlight, wear sunscreen when you go out, and use a wide-brimmed hat or umbrella to block the sun. Use skin care products and cosmetics that are hypoallergenic, low irritant, and less additive.
